The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, speaking on Wednesday at the end of the Schumann Security and Defense Forum in Brussels, warned that some of these crises could escalate into a major global confrontation "at a time when the world has become multipolar, and the multilateral system that is supposed to maintain peace is deeply weakened".

"We Europeans are facing two brutal wars near our borders and a lot of tensions that could easily get out of control - in Libya, in the Sahel, in the Western Balkans, in the Caucasus, in Sudan, in the Horn of Africa, on the borders ( Democratic) Republic of the Congo, in the Gulf, in the South China Sea, in South Asia, (and) gangs and drug cartels in Latin America and Central America," Borrell said.

He added that even institutions that are the core of the United Nations system, such as the International Court of Justice (ICJ), could be weakened.

"If the judgments of the International Court of Justice are not respected, the world will be in a much worse situation. And next time we will not appeal to the International Court of Justice again if this time its judgment is not implemented - and it is not. It is not," stressed Borrell.

He added that he knows that "geography is important" and that "wars that are close to us are more important than wars that are far away."

"But they are all interconnected. Every war, every crisis affects anywhere in the world," Borrell said, adding that public goods are at risk, from energy prices to freedom of navigation.

He assessed that the Schuman Security and Defense Forum was a necessary and important meeting.

"It is the second step in the direction of engaging Europeans with the rest of the world, and the rest of the world with us," said Borrell.

Yesterday, the second Schuman Forum for Security and Defense was held in Brussels, where political actors, high-ranking decision-makers, military representatives of EU member states and more than 60 partner countries, including Serbia, as well as international and regional representatives, gathered organizations, leading think-tank organizations and academic communities.

The aim of the forum was to shed light on how current and potential peace, security and defense partnerships can respond to the most pressing security threats and challenges and contribute to global peace and security, as well as support international order and rules-based multilateralism.
