Emergency session of the UN Security Council scheduled: "There is no safe place... The horror must stop"
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will hold an emergency session today due to an Israeli airstrike that hit a camp for displaced people in the town of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.
According to the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip, 45 people were killed in that attack.
The session was requested by Algeria, and will be held at 3:30 p.m. New York time, an unnamed UN diplomat told CNN.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack carried out by the Israeli army on Sunday.
"There is no safe place in Gaza. This horror must stop," Guterres said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attack was not intended to cause civilian casualties and that the incident would be investigated.
"We have already evacuated about a million civilians from Rafah and, despite our best efforts not to harm them, a tragic mistake has unfortunately occurred," Netanyahu said.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced earlier that they carried out a precise attack on the Hamas compound in the city of Rafah, where senior officials of the Palestinian militant group were gathering.
