An emergency meeting has been called
The Iranian government has called an emergency meeting for today following the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and the country's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian in a helicopter crash, the Iranian state news agency IRNA reported.
According to a photo released by the agency, the chair Raisi usually sits on is empty and covered with a black ribbon in memory of the president, CNN reported.
Iran's state media broadcast Islamic prayers between reports of the deaths of Raisi and eight others after the helicopter they were traveling in crashed in Iran's East Azerbaijan province.
Verses from the Qur'an were published on Raisi's account on the X platform.
"Peace be with Ebrahim. Verily, thus do We reward those who do good. Verily, he was one of Our faithful servants," the Quranic verses on Raisi's account state.
Raisi was the second most powerful figure in Iran's political structure after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
