Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is still in an extremely serious state of health and his operation is still ongoing, Defense Minister Robert Kalinak said tonight at a joint press conference with Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok.

Kalinak added that the operation has been going on for three hours. Šutaj Eštok said that the possible motive for the attack on Fico was of a political nature and added that the attacker fired five shots at Fico, reports Reuters.

He called on people to "not spread hatred" on social networks, and added that in the coming period, the protection of state officials and political representatives of both the ruling coalition and the opposition, as well as individual media, will be strengthened.

He pointed out that he will announce more details tomorrow. Earlier today, after the Government session in the town of Handlova, the Prime Minister of Slovakia was assassinated when the attacker fired several shots from close range.

Prime Minister was transferred to the hospital in Banska Bistrica in a very serious condition.

The police identified the attacker as a writer and supporter of the opposition party Progressive Slovakia named Juraj Cintula, born in 1953.

Peter Pellegrini, the elected president of Slovakia and a close ally of Robert Fico, called the attempt to kill the prime minister "a threat to everything that has adorned Slovakian democracy."

"I am appalled at where hatred of a different political opinion can lead. We don't have to agree on everything, but there are many ways to express our disagreement democratically and legally," he said on X.
