Russia bombed Russia, again
Russia has dropped bombs several times on its border region of Belgorod since Moscow launched a new offensive into northeastern Ukraine.
As reported by the Russian independent media Astra, in the last two and a half months, Russia mistakenly dropped at least 33 aerial bombs on internationally recognized Russian territory and regions in Ukraine under Moscow's control.
Moscow's military has previously acknowledged that Russian jets have inadvertently bombed Russian-controlled territories while targeting Ukrainian-controlled towns and cities, often using powerful air-guided bombs.
Russia accidentally dropped four of its FAB bombs on the Belgorod region on the border with northeastern Ukraine on Friday, followed by another FAB bomb on Saturday, Astra reported.
"This is not an isolated incident," the British government said on Saturday.
"These incidents demonstrate Russia's inability to successfully use its munitions on targeted targets," the UK Ministry of Defense said in an intelligence assessment, adding that the accidental release of bombs could have "lethal consequences" for the Russian population.
Astra reported on social media that another FAB bomb fell on a settlement in the suburbs of the city of Belgorod on Sunday evening. Belgorod regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said "explosive objects" fell on the village of Razumnoye, but gave no details.
Baza, a Russian Telegram channel allegedly linked to Russian security services, reported that an FAB-500 bomb fell near Belgorod on Sunday, but that the circumstances were "unknown".
On Friday, Russia launched an offensive against Ukraine's Kharkiv region, south of Belgorod, after weeks of intense aerial bombardment. Russia has transformed its series of Soviet-era FAB bombs from unguided munitions into devastating air-guided weapons that have wreaked havoc along the Eastern Front.
Ukrainian officials reported earlier this month that a 1,500-kilogram FAB bomb destroyed an entire street in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city. And earlier this month pro-Ukraine media reported that Russia had accidentally dropped a 250 kilogram FAB bomb on a civilian area of Belgorod.
Gladkov said that dozens of houses were damaged, but did not comment on the cause of the explosion.
Video also emerged last month showing a modified 1,500-kilogram bomb falling on a Russian-controlled village in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, although it did not explode.
In April, Astra reported that Moscow mistakenly targeted a village in the Belgorod region with a Kh-59 missile.
