The UN General Assembly supported the Palestinian candidacy for full membership in the UN
Today, the General Assembly of the United Nations supported the Palestinian candidacy for full membership in the UN.
The UN General Assembly recognized Palestine as eligible for membership, recommending that the UN Security Council again vote favorably on the matter.
The vote by the 193-member General Assembly was a global test of support for Palestinian bids to become a full member of the United Nations, a move that would effectively recognize a Palestinian state after the United States vetoed it in the UN Security Council last month, Reuters report.
The General Assembly adopted the resolution by 143 votes to nine – including the US and Israel – with 25 countries abstaining. It does not grant the Palestinians full UN membership, but simply recognizes them as eligible to join.
The request for full membership in the UN must first be approved by the 15-member Security Council, and then by the General Assembly.
Reuters adds that if the council votes in favor of Palestinian membership in the UN, it is likely to face a U.S. veto again.
