Jihadists are not resting: At least 10 attacks prevented in Europe
Western intelligence agencies have prevented at least 10 jihadist attacks across Europe in 2023, with the war in the Gaza Strip increasing the threat of possible further attacks, the Dutch intelligence agency AIVD said today.
"There were two mobilizing events - the destruction of the Koran in the Netherlands and other European countries, as well as the conflict between Israel and Hamas," the Dutch agency announced.
The statement did not say how many potential attacks had been foiled since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip on October 7.
The Dutch Anti-Terrorism Agency has raised the threat level from terrorist attacks to level four out of a possible five, describing the danger as "significant".
Sweden raised its terror alert to its second-highest level in August after activists burned the Koran and sparked jihadist threats, angering the local Muslim population.
In addition, in October, a 20-year-old man killed a teacher with a knife and seriously wounded two others in an attack on a school in the city of Arras in northern France, which President Emmanuel Macron called "barbaric Islamic terrorism."
