Urgent evacuation in Russia, chaos ensued VIDEO
The water level in the Ural River in the Russian city of Orenburg rose overnight by almost 50 centimeters, said First Deputy Mayor Alexei Kudinov.
In the meantime, regional governor Denis Pasler called on the city's residents to evacuate from flooded areas.
"The night was restless... The level of the Urals is rising and now it has risen by almost 50 centimeters overnight," Kudinov told reporters, RIA Novosti reports.
According to him, hydrologists predict that the water level will rise by another 30-70 centimeters in the next 24 hours.
More than 300 households were flooded in the city during the night, and more than 200 private houses were threatened.
The Orenburg mayor's office announced on Tuesday evening that as of 10 p.m. local time, the level of the Ural River rose one centimeter above the danger level and was 931 centimeters.
The regions of the southern Urals faced record floods this year, and the worst situation is in the Orenburg region.
On Friday, April 5, the dam that protected Orsk from the Ural River broke there. The authorities carried out a mass evacuation of residents from the Old Town.
6,995 residential buildings with gardens were flooded and 2,493 people, including 797 children, were evacuated from the flooded houses.
The regional government estimates the damage from the floods at 21 billion rubles. A state of emergency is also in effect in Russia's Kurgan and Tyumen regions.
The water level in the Tobol River, according to Roshydromet forecasts, will exceed 11 meters. In some municipalities, the preventive evacuation of the population has begun.
The authorities of neighboring Kazakhstan announced that the current floods are the biggest in the last 80 or more years, and a state of emergency has been declared in some regions of the country, according to the RIA Novosti agency.
