Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said he was "not worried" about further escalation of the economic conflict with China, calling Chinese President Xi Jinping "one of the (few) very smart people in the world," Newsweek reports.

''I don't think he would let that happen. The US is far more powerful than people realize. We have a weapon that nobody knows what it is, and it is the most powerful weapon in the world," Trump said.

China has announced that it will impose tariffs of 84 percent on all products from the United States, further increasing the previously announced tariff of 34 percent, and has also filed a new complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO).

It was decided in response to an earlier measure by the administration of US President Donald Trump, which imposed tariffs of 125 percent on Chinese goods.
