The first earthquake was 16 kilometers northwest of the city of Sagaing, in the central part of the country, at a depth of 10 kilometers at around 2:20 p.m. local time, the USGS said. After 12 minutes, another strong earthquake of magnitude 6.4 followed.

The earthquake was also felt in neighboring India, as well as in Thailand. According to some reports, the earthquake was also felt in China, and the earthquake monitoring agency there estimated that the earthquake in Myanmar was as strong as 7.9 degrees on the Richter scale.

At least 144 people have died in Myanmar, the state television network announced on Telegram.

They added that 732 people were injured in the earthquake and aftershocks that occurred this morning.

An earthquake at the worst possible time

This earthquake hit Myanmar at the worst possible time, Joe Freeman, Amnesty International's Myanmar researcher, told the BBC.

There are currently more than three million internally displaced people in the country, and the UN estimates that more than a third of the population is in need of humanitarian aid.

In addition, the United States has frozen most aid, which further affects the systems for the protection of human rights and humanitarian aid, Freeman reminds.

The epicenter of the earthquake is in central Myanmar - an area Freeman describes as the "heart of the conflict" that is still ongoing.

"Civilians in that area are already exposed to numerous problems anyway - army airstrikes, clashes between the resistance and regime forces, cities under different control," Freeman said, adding that because of all this, the earthquake "will complicate the delivery of aid even more."

He also warned that the Myanmar army has a "well-documented history of denying aid to areas where rebel groups are present", and called on the army to provide "unhindered access to humanitarian aid" and prioritize the needs of civilians.
