Djokovic announced a few days ago that his coach will be the former world number one tennis player and two-time Olympic champion.
"My first reaction was that Djokovic wants to win more Grand Slams. Obviously, we would all like to see him win a 25th time in these tournaments. Now with Andy Murray to help him, I say he can still win the biggest trophies in 2025 and even in 2026," Wilander told Eurosport.
The Swede and currently a commentator on Eurosport, explained why this collaboration came about.
"Everything that Andy can say, Novak probably already knows. But Andy played against all the best players of today, against whom Novak will also play. He talked to Sinner, Alcaraz, Zverev, Medvedev, Tsitsipas, trained with them and he will not hide it as a secret in front of Djokovic. There are many small details about them that Andy doesn't think about. He won three grand slams and two gold medals, also the Davis Cup. There are many things that Novak also knows, but maybe he won't remember," said Wilander, who also added why Novak made this move.
"It is a message that Novak still believes that he is able to play top tennis. Perhaps he also believes that his best years are still ahead of him. It is a strong message for Sinner and Alcaraz, as well as the other world's best tennis players. Andy can become a great coach. He understands very well how to work hard, how to play your best when you need to. We always talk about how to reach your maximum when it matters most. He's won Wimbledon twice and he's British and the pressure was on huge".
The similarity between Djokovic and Murray is that both of them had interaction with the coaches in their box.
"Unlike Federer and Nadal who almost never addressed their bench, both Nole and Andy did it or do it with great emotions. That's why it will be interesting how it will be between them. When Novak looks towards Andy during the match and asks for advice. What should I do now? Why is my forehand not working? What can you tell me? It's going to be one of the most interesting relationships between coaches and players that we've ever had," Wilander concluded.
