From the first of January, free public transport in Belgrade
"All public transport in Belgrade will be free," said Aleksandar Šapić, the mayor of Belgrade.
He announced today, as he said, "a complete package of social measures that have not existed in Belgrade for the last 50 years", which will begin to be implemented on January 1, 2025.
At the press conference, he presents the City's plans for 2025.
"There are no more monthly tickets, annual tickets, or discounts. With this social measure, Belgrade becomes the only city in Europe with more than half a million people that has free transportation," Šapić said.
As he emphasized, by the end of 2025 there will be no buses older than two years in Belgrade.
"I am the first one who wanted to deal with the problems. I told you that, until the subway arrives, as the primary form of transportation, Belgrade is the only city of this size, and that has such a large number of cars, without a subway," he said.
"Since we introduced the measure of 33,000 dinars subsidizing private kindergartens, 3,000 more children have enrolled in kindergarten. That is an average of approximately 15 new kindergartens," he added.
As for the other items related to the social policy of the City of Belgrade, Šapić reminded what else is free in the capital and what all the benefits are available for citizens:
- free kindergartens for all Belgrade children (33,000 dinars per month);
- student family allowance - 20,000 dinars (for each Belgrade student);
- free entrance to city swimming pools for all Belgraders during the summer season (total value - 40,000 dinars per person);
- New Year's gift vouchers worth 6,000 dinars for all Belgrade children up to 19 years of age and employees in school and preschool institutions;
- free English language for preschoolers (monthly - 3,500 dinars).
The mayor said that the website "Belgrade Now" will also be designed and opened, so that everything done in the capital can be found in one place.
