Snow in Belgrade: Get ready, it's coming
In the hilly and mountainous regions of Serbia on Monday morning, Kuršumlija, Brus, Kopaonik, Zlatibor and Goč were the first to be hit by snowflakes, and in the afternoon, there were a few snowflakes on Avala in the vicinity of Belgrade.
However, meteorologist Ivan Ristić says that he will not be surprised if Košutnjak turns white in just a few days.
The start of the thaw is moving
In the weather forecast published on Facebook, Ristić states that "in addition to the fact that it is cold near the ground, it is getting colder above and the beginning of a significant thaw is constantly moving, and currently it is on Monday, November 18". Meanwhile, his model shows that there will be a change on Thursday that will cause snow in the lower areas as well.
"According to the IRIE model, on November 14, more precipitation, sleet and snow are also possible in lower areas, higher than 200 meters above sea level. We have Košutnjak in Belgrade and there are great chances that the first snowflakes will fall right there. We are monitoring, the models are constantly changing." says Ivan Ristic.
Belgrade on the verge of snowfall
He explains that an additional influx of cold air mass from the northeast is expected between Wednesday and Thursday and that the cyclone in the southern part of the Adriatic will bring more cloudiness and more precipitation, rain in the lower parts and snow in the hilly and mountainous parts of Serbia.
"Most of Serbia will be under precipitation, in the lower part I expect rain with the fact that there may be sleet and snow, and this applies to the region south of the Sava and Danube. Belgrade is on the border, and the snow limit could be 200-250 meters and the snow could reach Košutnjak. But we will see how the temperature will change in the following days, if it remains low, then the chances are high," says Ristić.
Temperature drop in Belgrade
The maximum temperature in Belgrade this week will be between nine and 10 degrees, and on Thursday it is expected to drop to five degrees Celsius and the weather will be cloudy.
The meteorologist notes that despite all the doubts that arise when it comes to the forecast, cold arctic air is definitely coming, but the outcome of the current forecasts, both for Belgrade and for other parts, depends on its path.
An additional amount of cold air arrives
If the branch of the polar vortex moves towards Western Europe, a thaw is expected for a few days, but if it moves through the valley of Roma and through the "Viennese gate", a stronger cooling will arrive.
"The average temperatures for Belgrade in the first decade of November are a minimum of four to eight degrees, a maximum of 12 to 15 degrees, for the second decade the minimum is three to six degrees, the highest is nine to 13 degrees, while according to the long-term average, Belgrade in the third decade had the lowest temperature, ranging from one to four degrees and the highest is seven to 11 degrees," concludes Ristić.
