The alarm of all alarms is on; The world is facing a very dangerous cycle

The level of emissions of gases that cause the greenhouse effect reached a new record in 2023, due to which temperatures on our planet will rise for many years to come, according to the latest report of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Carbon dioxide is accumulating in the atmosphere faster than at any time during human existence and has increased by more than 10 percent in just two decades, according to a report published on the website of the World Meteorological Organization.

It was added that carbon dioxide emissions caused by large forest fires, as well as a possible reduction in the amount of carbon absorbed by forests, combined with high levels of carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels, contributed to this.

''This should ring alarm bells among decision-makers. It is clear that we are not on track to meet the target set by the Paris Agreement to limit global warming and reduce temperatures to less than two degrees Celsius, with a target of 1.5 degrees compared to pre-industrial levels. It's not just a statistic, because a temperature increase of just a fraction of a degree affects our lives and the planet," said Director General of the World Meteorological Organization Celeste Saulo.

The WMO emissions report is also published to provide information to the UN Conference on Climate Change.

In the 20 years since the report was published, the level of carbon dioxide emissions increased by 11.4 percent.

The report warns us that we are facing a potentially dangerous cycle. In the near future, climate change could lead to ecosystems becoming larger sources of harmful gas emissions, warns WMO Deputy Secretary General Ko Barrett.
