Expert warns: Parents, don't call your children on their way home from school
Damir Okanović from the Traffic Safety Committee said that every pedestrian crossing must be properly marked, if it isn't, there's a procedure in place to do so.
He advises parents not to call children who go to and from school alone until they get home, because they "report" on the phone how it was at school and don't look carefully while crossing the pedestrian crossing.
The public company "Roads of Belgrade" monitors the condition of the road, which includes the condition of the traffic signals, and reacts if citizens point out that the pedestrian crossings near the school have faded, says Damir Okanović from the Committee for Traffic Safety.
According to him, every pedestrian crossing must be properly marked.
"By law, they are required to supervise all roads under their jurisdiction. This applies to all road managers in Serbia, including the roads in Belgrade," says Okanović.
The speed limit in school zones is 30 kilometers per hour if it is in a residential area, and the fines are from 3,000 dinars for a minimal speed limit, up to 30 days in prison for large speed limits, but if there is a collision, i.e. if a child is injured, then the penalties are much higher.
