Feces are released once, and during the summer, twice a day, which, according to the Podgorica portal, makes any fishing or stay in the Montenegrin part of Bojana pointless.

"Incidents occur about 500 meters from the fork upstream, at the first bend. Previously, sewage was discharged only at night so that it could not be seen, now it is done openly during the day. We can't fish because of the unbearable stench, so we give up. The discharge has a disastrous effect on the flora and fauna of the river,'' said one of the fishermen from Bojana.

Ulcinj ecologist Dželal Hodžić said that sewage spills near Velipoja, garbage, poaching, dead animals floating in the river are just some of the issues that require urgent attention from the competent institutions of Montenegro and Albania.

"I know where the sewage from Velipoja flows into Bojan, I've been a couple of times, and once I saw dead eels on the surface, but Skadar is responsible for that, not that tourist center. Before the season, I went to Shim and wanted to talk to the mayor about all these problems, but I didn't manage to reach him,' he said.

He added that along Bojana, on the stretch from Shkodër to the sea, there are eleven inhabited places. The news reports that this is not the first environmental incident in Bojana, as plastic bags with hundreds of dead chickens were spotted floating in the river five years ago.

There was no reaction from Albania, except for a statement saying that "it is possible that they arrived from that country, but it does not necessarily mean".

Analyzes of the Montenegrin Food Safety Authority showed that the dead poultry had Salmonella type C.
