Brnabić: I expect the deans to take responsibility after fulfilling the students' demands
Speaker of the National Assembly of Serbia, Ana Brnabić, stated that the academic community is one of the most important segments of society, that honest student struggle is always welcome.
She said she expects the deans to take responsibility after meeting the students' demands and talk to the students.
In her statement to Tanjug, she pointed out that she now expects the deans, who supported the four demands of the students that were fulfilled, to pledge their authority and return to their work - which is the creation of new experts and people who will lead Serbia in the future.
"President Vučić sent a clear message last night - we will continue with our work from Monday. We have fulfilled all the requests, there were four of those requests, not four hundred and forty-four. So, it is easy to check how many requests there were and whether they are met. Anyone with a little common sense and honesty can see that all four requirements are met. Further playing cat and mouse shows, those are all just excuses to continue the protest and that it is political protest. It has nothing to do with the legitimate and always good student struggle, then it is about the form, not the substance. So there were four demands, I expect that, in accordance with the responsibility taken by some of student leaders, to stick to it. I think it's good for our democracy. If the protests continue, it's proof that it's about something else, not a student struggle," said the president of the parliament.
Brnabić said that rectors and deans who supported the student's demands, which were fulfilled, are now expected to make a move.
"The academic community is, in my opinion, one of the most important segments of society, especially higher education. Being the rector of a university is an honor and responsibility that is one of the most important in a society. Being a dean carries the same weight. If the majority of them supported the demands of the students, they have to take responsibility. They have to talk to their students, put their authority and say they have to show seriousness and responsibility. You had four demands, we supported you, they are fulfilled - it's okay, we go back to teaching , we are returning to what we have to deliver for our entire society. And that is the creation of the next generations that should lead Serbia. Those are not the blocks of the faculty in relation to what comes to mind on the spur of the moment, these are not democratic practices. My question to the deans is - the requirements have been met, what will you do now," said Brnabić.
The president of the assembly said that Serbia will be able to preserve institutions and the rule of law, and that even if these protests are political protests, the final goal is not clear.
"It is not clear to me what the political goals are. The political goal can be a change of government, but only through democratic means. One way is the advisory referendum that President Vučić talked about, which would be launched by the National Assembly with 126 signatures of MPs, in which we would ask the citizens whether they want us to start the impeachment procedure. If the majority says yes - Aleksandar Vučić resigns immediately. The second solution is extraordinary parliamentary elections, but if we are talking about them as political representatives, we will see Monday whether the protests were political or not," she said.
Brnabić said that Serbia will not be a country where justice is served on the street.
"Serbia will be able to preserve its internal stability, Serbia will be able to preserve and additionally strengthen its institutions because we inherited it from someone before us, and we should leave them stronger to someone who will come after us. Serbia will be able to preserve the rule of law'', Brnabić concluded.
