"Responsibility cannot end with the resignation of Vesić"
Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević said today that the tragedy in Novi Sad cannot end with the resignation of the Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, Goran Vesić.
As he said, political responsibility and resignations will be a topic in the coming days, among other things, at the meeting of the Main Board and the Presidency of the Serbian Progressive Party, scheduled for Friday.
"But no one will resign because hooligans threaten. There is nothing to be gained from that, only those who demolished and set fire will be held criminally responsible," Vučević told RTS.
Prime Minister expressed his belief that President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, will also attend the session.
"I hope that, despite the large number of state obligations, he will come to hear what the party's position is. It would be very useful for all of us. Political responsibility is still a topic and we will discuss it," Vucevic said.
He assessed that the accountability of those responsible for the tragedy in Novi Sad cannot be avoided, and that they will be held accountable, as well as all those who committed criminal acts at the protest in Novi Sad.
"What happened does not absolve you from being able to beat people, the police and burn buildings," warned Vucevic.
Speaking about the participants of the protest, he said that they did not allow the families to bury the victims, nor to learn the most terrible news.
"The police have not yet announced the identity of the dead, and someone has already said - let's tear down and break everything. Of course, there are obscure and disgusting accusations that it is a murder, not a tragedy. That is the most disgusting thing I have heard, to have the right to call such an accident a murder," said Vučević.
He added that they could have gone to the Railway Station to light candles, to pray, to express their solidarity and empathy in another way.
"No. They went to destroy, break, demolish, beat and smash, and that is their only goal. I repeat, I make a big difference between the largest number of people who gathered. Those people, carried by sadness, pain, anger and rage, came to that gathering. And you have a smaller group that, of course, saw the space as the drummers of evil to abuse this event," said Vucevic.
He added that this is confirmed by the fact that, when the attack on the City Hall in Novi Sad began, 90 percent of the people left the meeting because, as he said, no one will participate in those things.
"People don't think it's related to the tragedy at all, nor do they expect it. You see, there is no interest in answers to the question of what happened," said Vucevic.
Prime Minister stated that we are facing a difficult period of national recovery, as well as a difficult period for Novi Sad.
Speaking about Goran Vesić, Vucevic said that he did not contribute to the fall of the canopy and that he is not subjectively guilty, and that his resignation is an act of responsibility.
"I am grateful to him for that and I appreciate his move. This is how a responsible politician behaves, a man who was elected to carry the burden of responsibility above all," said Vucevic.
He reminded that he was at the scene when the accident happened, with the people, and that the mayor of Novi Sad, Milan Djurić, was at every funeral, as well as that the families of the victims would receive all kinds of support in the coming period.
"I believe that in the coming period we will also discuss how we will mark this place of suffering - a reflection of responsibility, concern and warning that such things do not happen ever again".
The Prime Minister added that this tragedy is a call for unity to save the country and people, as well as to determine who is guilty and responsible for the tragedy.
Speaking about the three seriously injured who are in the Clinical Center of Vojvodina, Vučević said that everyone in the Government trusts the skill and knowledge of doctors, nurses and technicians to save their lives.
He assessed that it will be difficult to determine whether the tragedy is the result of action or inaction. "Nothing is achieved with violence. Do not kill the dead again," said Vucevic.
Speaking about the building of the Railway Station in Novi Sad, Vučević said that it is a 60-year-old building and that it would be fair to the families of the victims if the authorities were allowed to conduct the investigation in the best possible way.
"Certainly, the responsibility of those who are guilty in the criminal-legal sense will be established. Whether by doing something that should not have been done, or by not doing, in fact by not maintaining the object in the way it had to be maintained. I cannot exclude neither one nor the other possibility, because none of us has all the data at this moment," Vučević said.
He assessed that it would be good to move politics out of that field and to let the police and the prosecutor's office do their work, with the support of experts and institutions that can help with their knowledge to reach the necessary answers.
