The session of the UN Security Council on the UNMIK report has begun
The session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) where the new, six-month report of UN Secretary General António Guterres on the work of the UNMIK Mission is discussed began today at the UN headquarters.
Serbia will be represented at the session by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marko Djurić, while the special representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in AP Kosovo and Metohija and the head of the UNMIK Interim Administration Mission, Caroline Ziadeh, will speak about the report in front of the UN.
The session was convened by Switzerland, which is presiding over that body this month.
In the new report, Guterres assessed that the atmosphere in the north of AP KiM is tense and that there is a possibility of escalation, and called on all parties to reaffirm their commitment to the EU-mediated dialogue.
In the report that refers to the period from March 16 to September 15, he stated that unilateral moves, such as the closure of institutions financed by Belgrade, steps towards the reopening of the bridge over the Ibar in Kosovska Mitrovica, as well as restrictions on the flow of goods from central Serbia and implementation of the new monetary policy, raise tensions between communities and institutions.
"Such actions not only disrupt the daily lives and socioeconomic rights of those they affect, but also threaten the collective progress and stability that are key to the path to a peaceful and prosperous future for all," stated Guterres and emphasized that it is necessary to find an answer to the concerns of the Serbian community regarding possible actions related to health and educational institutions in AP KiM.
Since the adoption of Resolution 1244 of the UN Security Council on June 10, 1999, the UNSC has discussed AP Kosovo four times a year until 2018, three times from 2019, and from 2020, those sessions are held twice a year - in April and October.
