EU warns Israel: "Totally unacceptable"
The European Union appealed for an immediate end to attacks on UN peacekeeping forces, stressing that they represent a serious violation of international law and are "totally unacceptable".
In a statement by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, issued on behalf of the EU regarding the attack on the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the EU expressed serious concern over the recent escalation along the Blue Line, which refers to the border between Lebanon and Israel.
"The EU condemns all attacks on UN missions. It expresses particularly serious concerns regarding the attacks by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), in which several peacekeepers were wounded. Such attacks on UN peacekeepers represent a serious violation of international law and are completely unacceptable. These attacks must stop immediately," the EU Council said in a statement.
At the same time, it is added that all actors have an obligation to take the necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property, as well as to respect the inviolability of UN premises at all times.
"We urgently expect explanations and a detailed investigation by the Israeli authorities about the attacks on UNIFIL, which plays a fundamental role in the stability of southern Lebanon," the statement said.
The EU expressed deep concern over Hezbollah's continued rocket fire at Israel, which it said must stop, as well as attacks by the Israel Defense Forces in densely populated areas of Lebanon.
"We call on all parties to respect international humanitarian law, in all circumstances. The EU reiterates its call for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and appeals to all parties to commit and work towards the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701," the statement concludes.
