Important address by Aleksandar Vučić: The general debate in the UN General Assembly begins
The general debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) begins today in New York, where more than 140 world leaders and state representatives will gather, including the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić.
The general debate begins today at 9:00 a.m. U.S. time, i.e. at 3:00 p.m. CET.
The general debate is opened by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, and then, in the established order, the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is the first to speak, the second on the list of speakers is the President of the USA, Joseph Biden, and the third is the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
President Vučić is 14th on the list of speakers on the first day of the general debate. The presidents of Switzerland, Colombia, South Africa, Lithuania, Guatemala, Maldives, Tajikistan, Sierra Leone, Angola, as well as the Emir of Qatar and the King of Jordan will address the participants.
The general debate is part of the UN General Assembly session and is held at the beginning of each regular session in September.
It was announced that this year's theme will be joint action for the promotion of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for current and future generations, but each speaker can present a topic that they consider particularly important.
The session of the UN General Assembly is considered one of the biggest diplomatic events in the world, and this year it is being held in the shadow of increasing crises, conflicts and wars around the world.
Among the topics of this year's debate will certainly be the wars in Gaza, Sudan, as well as the increasing possibility of escalation of the war in the Middle East, and many world leaders will also talk about the conflict in Ukraine.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to speak on Thursday morning, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday afternoon.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's speech is scheduled for Wednesday, September 25, while Russia's position will be presented by the head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, on Saturday, September 28.
For leaders of small island countries and others affected by climate change, the topic will be the fight against global warming. Each participant in the general debate will be given 15 minutes to present.
The general debate will last until Monday, September 30.
