Fico told TA3 television that, after stopping gas transit through Ukraine, alternative routes should be used for gas transit, such as the gas pipeline through Hungary, Slovak Hnonline reported.

"In 2024, all measures were taken because we had to count on the possibility of stopping the flow of gas from the east, we have full tanks, we have contracts on diversification, as far as domestic consumption is concerned, we still have no problems," said Fico, who said that the Russian side confirmed that it will supply three to 3.5 billion cubic meters of gas.

Slovak Prime Minister repeated that, according to him, Slovakia will lose 500 million euros from taxes due to the suspension of gas transit.

He said that by stopping the flow of gas through Ukraine, Europe will lose approximately 13.5 billion cubic meters of gas, which will put pressure on increasing prices, which, according to him, are currently five times higher than in the United States of America.

"This is the main reason why I was in Brussels, where I warned the Commission, they know this very well. If we don't continue to work on importing a certain amount of gas from the east via Ukraine, then we will witness a gas shortage in Europe and we will witness a huge increase in gas prices in Europe," stressed Fico.

Fico reminded that, if the situation does not change within a few weeks, he will initiate reciprocal measures against Ukraine, which he already announced on Thursday.

As an example of reciprocal measures, Fico cited stopping the supply of electricity to Ukraine, stopping humanitarian aid, or even vetoing further aid to Ukraine from the EU.

Economy Minister Denisa Sakova discussed gas transit through Ukraine with European Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen on Thursday, after which it was announced that a special EU-level group will be formed starting next week, with the participation of the Slovak minister.

Ukraine has informed that it will not participate in the work of this group.

As of January 1, 2025, Russian gas no longer flows through Ukraine to the countries of the European Union, as the five-year supply contract expired, which has not been renewed.
