"This kind of program does not exist anywhere in the world"; Mali: We start from March 1
Minister of Finance Siniša Mali talks about current economic topics, including loans for young people.
"It is a sign of independence, that you have taken a step further. If you look at this program, I think it is one of the most important economic programs. You expect that there will be a greater demand for apartments and that construction activity will start. We have been thinking for years about what is the right program for our youth," Mali said about youth loans.
"There are two basic factors when you buy an apartment: the first is the level of participation. Under current conditions, you need 20 percent. That's a lot, it's the first obstacle that young people have. That's why we go with a participation of 1 percent. 750 euros is not a lot of money. On the other hand, the problem is the interest. You should set aside part of your income for that - and the state will help for that over the course of six years. Young people need 5-6 years to get back on their feet," he said.
"When you look at the first year of the loan, the monthly installment is only 93 euros, the state gives 124 euros from the budget, in the second year you give 198 euros, the state again gives 124 euros. And so on for six years. There is no reason why young people should not take advantage of this opportunity", he stated.
According to him, this lending program for young people is unique in Serbia, it does not exist anywhere in the world. He reminded that we have record low unemployment and a record level of foreign direct investments, as well as the fact that this year, for the first time, Serbia received an investment credit rating.
All young people aged 20-35 can apply for this loan.
"We will start implementing it on March 1, 2025. From then on, every employed and unemployed person will be able to take it," Mali emphasized, adding that only "strong and stable economies" can do this.
"I expect that more banks will take advantage of this opportunity," concluded Mali. He also stated that early repayment will be free of charge.
"This can only be done by a strong state that cares about young people. The conditions are that it must be the first real estate, for employed and unemployed people aged 20-35, the state subsidizes the loan and interest. We will start implementation from March 1, 2025," he underlined.
