Memorandum of Understanding between Serbia and the EU regarding mineral resources signed
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is in Belgrade, where he will attend the Summit on Strategic Raw Materials. He was welcomed by the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, at Nikola Tesla Airport last night.
The German chancellor said that the signing of the agreement was a joyful occasion.
"A happy occasion. We have signed an important agreement that will strengthen our cooperation. The companies that will be involved, along with the institutions, that is something that cannot be estimated... We must reduce our dependencies and discover new sources of raw materials around the world. The decision requires courage, but it was brought at the right moment," Scholz said.
A historic day
European Commissioner Maroš Ševčović stated that this is a historic day.
"It is really great to be here in Belgrade, especially today, because we met on a historic day. We are already living in an era of clean technologies while protecting our planet. I congratulate you on the initiative...", he said during his address after signing the memorandum.
"Each battery will have a digital passport, where the public will be able to access information," he said, explaining the creation of the batteries.
Vucic's address after signing the Memorandum
"I am proud of what we started today. The project is important for Europe, but it represents a turning point and a quantum leap into the future for Serbia," said Vučić.
"Serbia will insist, and as president I will personally fight for the environment and for the lives of our citizens in Jadar and Radjevina, so that their water and air are clean. I spoke with Scholz and Ševčović about this," said Vučić.
He pointed out that this project is of great economic importance for Serbia.
"The project will bring us at least six billion foreign direct investments, the entire production chain is of great importance for us, it will bring enormous growth in Serbia. I trust Scholz when he gave his word, that means more to me than any signature, that he will do his best to the chain not moving forward, that we have everything in Serbia. It will be a different country, not the Serbia we know. Higher salaries, pensions..." said Vučić.
"The chancellor said that he will do his best to form a chain here, and I believe more in his word than in his signature. This will lead to a better life for people in Serbia, especially in Podrinje and Mačva, and that is why I am infinitely grateful to our partners", said Serbian president and added that he will continue the conversation with Ševčović today.
"Serbia has no sea, no gas, but we have to use what we have in the best possible way. We have increased our exchange with Germany three times in the past 12 years," he says, adding that the abolition of the PEM convention is of great importance.
Vučić once again thanked Scholz and Ševčević for the successful meeting and for taking care of the interests of our country and announced new big news from Monday.
