The director of a Croatian hospital that has gained notoriety for the conditions endured by its patients, and financial fraud, has been sacked. It took two attempts to finally remove Dr. Zoran Jukic from his position at the helm of the hospital that operates three of its wards illegally. Authorities sack head of Croatia's "snake infested hospital" Despite the fact that Croatia's health minister previously made a decision on replacing Jukic, the Nova Gradiska General Hospital's board met and moved to name him "acting director". The hospital has been known for financial scandals, but also for its leaking roofs, patients forced to sleep in what the media describe as bunkers, and snakes moving along its corridors. Additionally, its staff has been known to post photographs taken during surgeries on Facebook. This health institution is the most indebted of the country's hospitals, while six of its doctors decided to leave in the past several months, according to reports. A UN official who witnessed the conditions there was recently quoted by the New York Times as saying, "This is monstrous". The Croatian health insurance organization, HZZO, conditioned further financing of the hospital with Jukic's departure before he was sacked as "acting director". However, head of the Brodsko-Posavski District Danijel Marusic, of the HDZ party, attempted to present the case as "a political purge" carried out by the country's ruling Kukuriku Coalition, and described Jukic as being "well established in his job".
