Russian state-owned news agencies also use "Luhansk" when they report in English.
Transliterations are always tricky, so we try to use the most widely accepted versions.

Michael Thomas is right because of letter “Г”(«G»). Everybody in Russia knows that this letter Southern Russians (starting from Belgorod) and the Ukrainians pronounce different from the rest of the country. In the south they pronounce it like sound “gh” in word “Afghanistan” while others sound it «Г» literally as “G”. So the English source initially could be only a Ukrainian one. Because it cannot occur to a Russian call a Russian city of Луганск ( луг = meadow) as Луханск … In Russian it would sound as ridiculous as J. Psaki …

The people who live there spell it as "Lugansk." The people who are bombing Lugansk spell it "Luhansk." It is clear on which side B92 sit.

By the way, Lugansk was first settled by Serbs from the Krajina. It later grew in a big city occupied by Russians. But it was created by Serbs.

Michael Thomas,

All the more reason to bomb Luhansk.

If the Russians in East Ukraine had been treated as well as the Albanians in Kosovo, none of this civil warfare would be going on there. The Yugoslavians had been baby-sitting Albanians in Kosovo long before the breakup of the SFRY and the Serbs were paying for most of it.
(Paul, 12 June 2014 22:46)

Those idiot Albanians that could not understand what paradise they were living in Yugoslavia. And not just them, but those idiots Slovenes, Croats, Macedonians, Bosnian, Montenegrins were also unable to grasp what a paradise Yugoslavia was. Only the smart Serbs were able to see that.
----------

Russian claims to East Ukraine have the same weight as Serbian claims to Kosovo and the weight of history is denser than lead.
(Paul, 12 June 2014 22:46)

So you also mean that Italy has a much more justified claim to Kosovo since Rome owned Kosovo before the Serbs.

Paul, wake up that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard "treated well" hahaha. No one was treated well. Kosovo declared independence from SERBIA not YUGOSLAVIA. Yugoslavia was peaceful, until Serbs rose up with Sloba.

Paul

Luhansk would be surprised to learn of all the sympathy that is out there, but they need to update their Roledex.

Do they really expect Serbia to make a scene in support of Luhansk independence? Serbia is already playing a very, very tight diplomatic hand. The Russians of East Ukraine could do well to watch and learn.

It is a stupid joke to compare the Russians in East Ukraine with the Albanians in Kosovo. If the Russians in East Ukraine had been treated as well as the Albanians in Kosovo, none of this civil warfare would be going on there. The Yugoslavians had been baby-sitting Albanians in Kosovo long before the breakup of the SFRY and the Serbs were paying for most of it.

Strange request.
Questioner, you are right. Serbia is not know to recognize self-declared countries by a local ethnic minority on the soil of a sovereign state. Who do they think we are? UK? France? USA? Germany?

mr x

pre 10 godina

They forgot Simbabwe and DPRK. May be some people have a bit too extreme black and white view of the world. Or just because you are a misfit of the international scene doesnt mean you are alligned with all other outlaws. Serbia was actually only and always non-alligned in the truest sence but thats why others interpreted and misunderstood this for something else.

Questioner

pre 10 godina

Recognition from Serbia? Must be because Serbia is well known to eagerly recognize self-declared countries by a local ethnic minority on the soil of a sovereign state.

Randy

I think it's deeply offensive and arrogant that they sent a message to Serbia to recognize this entity.
1-Serbia is not like the other eastern countries which got the message (which are mostly ruled by dictators). Serbia should not allow itself to be grouped with these countries, it is extremely offensive.
2-Serbia does not support unilateral succession-ism, and, although they think Serbia supports the Russian side as it didn't impose sanctions, that is completely untrue, since Serbia did not impose sanctions because they are scared of Putin's reaction.
3-Serbia already stated it supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine, so it doesn't even recognize Crimea as being part of Russia.
4-Nikolic is already making Serbia's image worse by meeting with Balarus president.
Democratically elected leaders should not be friends with dictators! This nationalist president does not represent this country or its people.
