The operation cost over $70 million.
So, why ask for more?"

I think that was more highly radioactive and higher quality waste which could have been used to make bombs or could have been recycled/reused to get some power/use out of (like for experiments). And I agree that this 'new' waste is probably the contaminated soil from the DU bombings. Those bombings were mainly in southern Serbia and Kosovo and they did clear up all that in southern Serbia and some in Montenegro too. They may have been quietly going after that in Kosovo too and plan to store it at Vinca (if they haven't already).
It seems Serb researchers and the more patriotic politicians aren't looking into this and monitoring it so well.

"it´s really high time that Tadic gets voted out of office. I think THEN, something like this won´t happen.

Jovan and all the anti Tadic outsider (how live in the west) read the arctic before you comment “The construction of the structure began in 2007" who was the President of Serbia in 2007? That also lost Kosovo by chancing the Serbian Constitution and not allowing the Serbian government room to negotiations(more than autonomy less than independents), in turn forcing the west to support Independents?

But, coming to this nuclear waste, why did they build it so close to Belgrade, this should have been built is central Serbia where you do not have to many people live there.

God Bless,
George

To all of you laughing at those who are angry about this, let me make it clear to you why people are angry and why you lot should keep your mouths shut.

The fact that the whole of Europe with all their space decides to set up a waste dump in Serbia is outrageous for the following reasons. First of all there is pleanty of space in bigger countries where local populations wouldn't be at risk. Secondly and I think what most people are getting at is that this is one of those unofficial EU conditions. Although not official and not necessarily compulsory, things like this are an easy way of getting Tadic to kneel and suck up to the EU, its one of the processes in which Serbia can 'speed up' its EU membership, even though this may not be the case its an even easier way to fool Tadic and to let him go against the wishes of the Serbian people even more. Nuclear waste takes thousands of years to disintegrate, and so the affects on local populations could be dire.

So THAT is why people are against it, all you people who come on here and laugh at concerned Serbs simply have no right, its alright for you to sit in your clean environments and laugh, but if it was happening in your respective countries or even local areas im sure you would be pissed off too.

Serbia's enemies will be loving this...Nuclear waste on Serbian soil close to Beograd. Not only has Serbia become smaller over the last 20 years but now it wants to poison the little bit of Serbia that's remaining. Great choice Mr. Tadic you've just created your own little Jasenovac right in your own back yard.

Just a quick note here. Alot of people have just played the Serbian perma victim mentality yet again (and seriouslly it really is getting tiresome), but please read the article....
(truthiness, 1 November 2011 22:12)

You expect the usual suspects to read the article? You expect them not to invent another conspiracy theory, for a change? You expect them not to spread their usual anti Tadic, anti EU, anti US, anti Kosovo, anti blablabla propaganda on any article, might it be as off-topic as it can be? You definitely expect too much :)

"The old storage facility at Vinča will be dismantled beginning in 2012 and transported to the new location, Pešić concluded."
How strange that evil NATO didn't 'have fun'(Crna Ruka) to bomb this storage facility to poison Serbs for 100.000 'generations to come'(Crna Ruka). Ah, of stupid NATO didn't know about it. LOL

But seriously: Serbia doesn't have nuclear power plants, where does all the nuclear waste already stored in this facility come from? Ahh, one of the usual suspects already has the answer:

"I think it will be used for all the depleted uranium tipped bombs and bullets that NATO sprayed all over Serbia. "

The Vinca Nuclear Institute has been existence since the early '50s, and Serbs are up in arms now? LOL, what's un-Serbian about utilising nuclear energy, and them dumping it afterwards in a safe and efficient manner (believe it or not, it's possible!)? Serbia has some of the most educated physicists and engineers in the world, on par with the Americans, the Russians and Israelis, and if anyone is going to be "born with seven heads" (lmao), it would be them, IF they're exposed in the event of a disaster, and that's IF a disaster actually happens.

Seriously, there are so many economic benefits to this (especially if neighbouring countries decide to utilise Serbia's future nuclear energy programs), and they greatly outweigh the potential for any disaster to happen. Fukushima and Chernobyl were unique tragedies, not regular occurrences.

Pulling something like this off won't be too difficult. The only thing the Serb elite has to do is claim that 'Kosovo je Srbija'. The rest will take care of itself.

Another poster was right. When future generations grow up to look like characters from 'The Hills Have Eyes' how will the Serb elite explain that phenomenon?

Oh, they will be long gone from power. It won't be their problem anymore.
They will keep passing the buck. Case in point: Kosovo.

Who will they blame them?

Reading these comments are hilarious. One nuclear waste site is not going to do anywhere near the amount of radiation poisoning and damage as what the Americans and NATO did during the 1999 bombing campaign utilising depleted uranium warheads. You'd think that you guys truely believe Serbia is the first ever nuclear disposal site in the entire world.

"Radojica Pešić of the Nuklearni Objekti Srbije (Nuclear Facilities of Serbia) public enterprise said ... that the site will have the capacity to store all radioactive waste from the Serbian territory during the next couple of decades.

"The old storage facility at Vinča will be dismantled beginning in 2012 and transported to the new location, Pešić concluded."

So in conclusion , the plant is going to do somethign that is already being done i.e. - "store all radioactive waste from the Serbian territory"

What you would rather do - make all the mess and then complain because no one will clean up after you? Or are you saying you should just leave the old wate site to just simply fall apart and expose the entire local population to the effects of nuclear waste that Serbia itself has created?

At least your president has the courage to take responsiblity - a character trait that is all too lackin among the small yet vocal extremist minority.

A hard and responsible decision has just been made by a Serbian to look after the local Serbian populaiton and Serbian interests and show the world that Serbia is an fact a responsible partner in important affairs - and what do you proud nationalists do : COMPLAIN.

(wtf, 1 November 2011 17:46)

Wrong, looks like you were simply too occupied to defend your "holy Kosovo" that you clearly lost sight about what is really important. Germans refuse to dump the nuclear waste even in Russia which always accept that, since Germany regards this is an internal obligation.

So spare the breath that this is "another subtle way to weaken Serbia". It is not. You simply lack a civil society or party which simply addresses that kind of problems. You have only "patriotic" parties, none for environmental issues such as the greens which is no surprise, either, since they also advocate other political topics which you would regard rather treacherous, either.

This nuclear waste disposal right in front of Belgrade gates is the very result of a one-sighted and one-topic politics of Serbia. In other countries, you would have barricades because of this. In Serbia, barricades, however, seems to be busy for other topics.

I don't get it. Just last year they celebrated the removal of all the waste that was at Vinca.

The operation cost over $70 million.
So, why ask for more?

As for the Tadic haters, let me tell you: Any other president would do the same.

"according to EU standards".

Yeah OK. If it was safe, they'd keep it in their country.
This smells of MAFIA and a huge bribe for the politicos.

Nuclear waste poisons your country for millenia, kids are born sick, tumors and all. It's the worst evil.
