Gorbi the russian version of Jimmy.I mean Carter.Peanuts, leather bags nonsense lectures. The world of losers.
(szemi, 22 September 2009 15:34)

Somehow, I like these "losers" better than the Bush versus Putin.

The misfortune is that often if there is a "loser" on one side - the other has the strongman.

We should remember, that Soviet Union fell apart largely due Yeltsin's "efforts". He was (CORRECTLY!!!) marginalized by Gorbachyov. He did see it correctly, Yeltsin was not suitable for his job.

The quickest form of revenge Yeltsin could do is to "pull" the country ( = USSR) from underneath of Gorbachyov. He did it underhandedly, with few heads of the local Ukrainian, Belarus, etc. communist organizations. They were of course happy because that gave them free hand from Moscow - so were these ridiculous countries born.

It happened in Belovezhskaya Puscha - and in some sense, it was a crime (treason) against the country (USSR). Yeltsin's star rose in a criminal act and this was the doom.

We shall not forget - Putin - came to power because he granted Yeltsin and his family to be free from prosecution. Yeltsin and his family collected quite some wealth - and it was what to fear.

To judge Putin's "leadership" all we need is to see his reaction during crisis: the Kursk Submarine, the siege of theater, downing two airplanes by Chechen terrorists, the case of Beslan school. He is from the old KGB school and he shows amazing indifference to human life and suffering.

Gorbi like every politician made mistakes and quite many - but at least he can sleep like a baby. I do see quite a few signs of improvement since Medvedjev replaced Putin and really hope one day Putin will retire from the politics.

Yaroslav, you should however be aware that Putin and the Oligarchs are best friends. Also, it is not known what kind of reforms Andropov would have had if he lived longer. One thing is certain, and that is that he would not tolerate these oligarchs like putin does.

Roberto,

Being censured today under this subject I was thinking about your remark of 2 days ago about censures on this site. Your posting can be very mild and just matter of fact type - like my one today - and still you can be "selected". I used to be a little bit upset. Not anymore. In my mind I just get confirmed that I express the truth and some people just don't like it.

B92,

Do you also have an ulterior motive behind it like trying to chase away people, who generally do not agree with you?

Gorbachev is more convincing as a political figure when advertising Louis Vuitton luggage. Just sitting there in the back of the car without saying a word... Impressive.

All totalitarian systems exist because of the use of force or the threat of using force.Love him or hate him Gorbachev refused to use force to keep the Soviet empire together against the will of its peoples. It is ironic that so called Western democratic leaders such as Thatcher and Mitterand would have quietly preferred Gorbachev use force to keep Germany from uniting so who is/are the real humanists here?It is not the US or any other countries which brought down the Berlin Wall and Communism in Europe. The Soviet Union would still exist today if it was not for ONE man and ONE simple non-action.That man is Gorbachev and the simple fact that he refused to use force against anybody. In my opinion Mikhail Gorbachev is the greatest man of the 20th century.

Gorbachev should just shut the f*** up.
This idiot destroyed the Russian empire for which 20 million Russians gave their life for nothing.
If it were not for him Russia wouldn`t face NATO on its borders,it wouldnt have lost 15 years because of the economical collapse of the 90s and of course the Balcan Wars would have turned out completely different.
Guess what he is doing now?
Yep,the former leader of a superpower is now advertising Louis Vittons women handbags.
What a disgrace!

America's democracy is a real shame, where two parties for the most part have monopolized the system. It's virtually impossible to get third parties, and so many people are discouraged from even voting.

LOL.

This man is irrelevant. He's attempts to change Russia failed so much that the 90s happenned. Not only that but in 1996 when he ran for president he achieved less then 1% support and in 2007 his SDP Russia stopped being a party as it failed to meet registration requirements.

His new Union of Social Democrats wasn't even a political party for a year before he begged an anti-putin oligarch to help him.

I like the fact that he's going with an oligarch. Ity shows who and how much Russians support Gorbachevs reforms.

No. The people despise oligarchs and Gorbachev. They prefer the Putin system based on the reforms Yuri Andropov wanted but couldn't implement due to his short 2 year rule.

germany should still have some kind of restrictions on her army/navy/airforce... it suprises me that they are still even able to call their airforce the luftwaffe and use that black and white cross for their ensignia... if putin was in power back then, things would have turned out quite different in the 90's...

Demagogue number one and traitor number two cares about thó people which hate him and blame him of many misfortunes that have occurred to us. Best if he talks about Germany where he has real sympathies. Despite severe English , French and Polish objections he helped them while he has nothing to boast with in Russia. The only state where he never dares to walk outside without securities is Russia.
So what people and what democracy is he talking about ? By the way Hamas , Hesbollah , Hitler , Stalin , Saddam , Saakashvili , Slobo , Hashish Thachi , Turkmenbashi , Daladeu , Karzai , Baby Doc , George Bush , Eltsyn , Lukashenko , Bolek & Lolek , Ahmadinejad and many others were also elected democratically.
