There is a song saying that in "Jugovizija".

Nothing to do with this topic, you just reminded me of it.

Thanks Szemi, we did trick train tariffs since late 70-s.... Even in the States we usually travelled by trains and did it cheaper in sleeper than others with cheapest airplane tickets. It's possible.

Unfortunately there is no connection via Bering Straits - otherwise I would go THAT way, not by airplane. Say "thanks" to Dubya, he killed more money in Iraq than what is needed to connect American and Russian rail systems. Plans do exist, but I doubt, they will be realized in next 2-3 decades.

After the #2 comment I was first a bit speechless, but than I became really sad. Here goes my 2009 vintage Albanian vine. :( It looks like their grapes have to much acid these days.

Here is the proof:

1) Albanian railway cars:

2) Russian railway cars in question (the RIC WLABm class will go to Bar):

It would be very funny - if it wouldn't be that sad. And grapes THAT sour. We don't like to make fun about Albanian system, it's a big tragedy, not fun. But since a mature comment appeared, unfortunately I had to answer. That's how it looks and in last few years it went from bad to worse. At least, HSH had some minimal web presence before. Kosovo is in better shape - "thanks" donations from Sweden, stolen equipment from JЖ/ЖС and UNMIK presence.

Interesting maybe it will be prison trains. Instead of Putin sending them to Siberian Gulags to die for running foul of him and his Russian state thought police KJB-FSB. Montenegro can have a new industry also they can ask for the Guantanamo prisoners the Americans are looking for a new home for them. It will be improving the Russian and American of their image kinder and gentler just a thought.

When I saw 1 comment beside this articale I was sure it must be our train fare guru Ataman. My betting instinct did not fail.A lot of good tips from this guy.Although I am a huge Fapados Berci(frequent user of low cost airlines who always manages to find great deals for friens as well)Ataman's comments succesfully directed my attention to fact that train travel still exists and besides being enviroment friendly can be cheap as well.

The return ticket is much less - with little tricks. Never forget, the Bar-Budapest round-trip is 66 Euro and Budapest-Moscow round-trip is 134 Euro. The sleeper surcharge is 30 Euro for each direction.

Thus we get about 260 Euro for the round-trip... not even using CITY-STAR offers for mini-groups.

The reason for the difference is regular train tariff versus combining BP-Bar and Moscow-BP discounts.

That 260 Euro can be further reduced by "breaking" the tickets at Debrecen, Nyíregyháza or Záhony. The reason for it is, Hungarian railway will offer "only" 50% discount on international tariff to Russia - but 60% discount to Serbia an CG. Thus, the more Hungarian distance is on the tickets to Serbia and the less on the "Russian" part, the cheaper will be the total.

The direct cars from Moscow are also great for residents of Hungary since there is no sleeper from Budapest to CG, only couchette. The snack in RZD cars is also cheaper than in others; a cup of tea is 15 RBL (30 Eurocent) even if you buy it on Budapest-Venice route. But going to Romanian or Hungarian car they want 2 Euro for a worse tea.

Unfortunately booking from the immediate stations is not possible, so residents of Budapest or Subotica or Novi Beograd have to go to the train directly and ask the "provodnik" for available space. The surcharges are somewhat cheaper than in other East European sleepers and MUCH cheaper than in "Western" sleepers.
