The Ahtisaari package accounts for the best minority rights and even priviledges in the world.

For the worst scenarios, go in some African countries where people get flogged and stoned, and then compare.

Or actually, just think back at the Yugo-split wars when people suffered the terror of genocide, and then compare.

I don't even know why a country like Serbia is being asked any kind of negotiation, it's like asking one of the biggest human right breachers to approve a package with the best human rights in the world...it's just too unlikely and I'd call it silly.

EA, let me answer your statement which is "Every new state has a history".
Guess what!!! Kosovo is NOT a state but a PROVINCE. This should clear things up.
Why did Yugoslavia try to stop break of the country is not a subject here. Yugoslava did not try to stop Slovenia. The whole thing happened peacefully. There was no war there.
Yugoslavia did not try to stop Montenegro. No war there either. The only time war happened was when Croatia and Bosnian Muslims started hostilities against the Serbs. The first casualty of the Bosnian war was a Serb. Remember the wedding that went horribly bad in Sarajevo where the father of the groom was shot?

Funcakes, You make me laugh about your silly statement of Serbs being the best protected minority in Kosovo.
I suppose when Serbian children are escorted in armored vehicles to school etc. that would classify as the best protection in the world.
The question is WHY are Serbian children under threat. Why the need for such drastic protection?
If you call that the best protection in the world show me the worst.

S - Montenegro is already ripped apart, they're a minority in their own country.

But did Serbia moan about the Serbs in there? Of course not. How come? The Serbs in Montenegro can be ruled under another country, but the Serbs in Kosovo can't, even if they have the best minority protection plan in the world?

Too much double standards.

Peggy and Ron,

You still didn't answer my question. Why Serbia did try to stop the break up of Yugoslavia? What means did they use to achieve that? Every new state and country has got a history. The history of Kosova is sealed in summer 1999.

Ron, where would serbia be without RUssia? Nowhere or better yet where your Holland that you so much talk about, would be without US, another soviet republic.

Someone mentioned Montenegro earlier, and I just want to return to the issue of Montenegro to stress how important it is to NOT to grant the Albanians in Kosovo independence from Serbia. What are the Albanians in Montenegro doing today? They are ripping the country apart!!! Besides, you already have your own country; Albania.

EA,

You are so selfish. You can only say wait and see because the US and EU happen to support Kosovo.
Where is the support for Tibet?

Where would you be without NATO and EU? NOWHERE!!

Well...getting into the "Balcan Affairs' is not a good decision of Slovenes, who have been reasonably pragmatical in the times of Tito...probably, since they cannot do much business "outside', they are trying, quite logical, to promote their economic interests 'Eastwards"...Serbia, so far, is their biggest market...no further comments...

EA,
So now you are pinning your hopes on Slovenia.
If the US couldn't deliver what makes you think Slovenia will?
Mr Bush has removed himself from all of this very nicely.

Must admit I didn't expect him to bow out this way, but it is creative.

Ron and Peggy,

Just be a little bit more patient and you will see soon that Kosova will be fully independent.
It is an unstoppable process. How hard did Serbia try to stop Montenegro's independence? Come on Serbia panel! What did you do to stop the break up of Yugoslavia?

"Instead, according to the STA, Ljubljana will recognize Kosovo's independence "with an appropriate group" of EU countries.

THAT WOULD MAKE PERFECTLY SENSE. It would be the most nonsense of the century to allow Cyprus to determine the fate of Kosova. It is just so stupid even to think about it. Cyprus or any other country by all means can object Kosova's independence individually but no dicate other countries wishes. That would be their problem.

Cvele

and with that be responcible for setting the EU back another 15 years. Slovenia can do whatever it wants, its clear they will be to the EU what Bush was to the US. The end.
