A UN force acquiescing to the political will of Israel and the US tasked to "back the Lebanese Government," is a delusion. Hezbollah is winning the military war against Israel/America and is the only force defending the bombed and threatened children of Lebanon and Palestine. Any advance to the Litani River in Lebanon by Israel may well be prevented by Hezbollah and whatever other Lebanese people that are available to defend their current borders. Under these (winning) circumstances, no UN force would be accepted by the people of Lebanon on their soil on terms dictated by their enemy - they simply don't have to! Interestingly (to me), the Palestine Road Map to peace appears to have been abandoned by the US, now. If Lebanon (ie: Hezbollah, their countrymen and their Shiite neighbours) is given more time for any reason, it may be in a position to assist the besieged and (legally) democratic people of Palestine. The wider Arab/Israeli conflict will end (possibly) forever when Israel accepts the frequently made 'Arab' offer of a safe state behind the 1967 borders. The UN cannot help Israel with any resolution of their problems - the rest of the Middle-East knows this. In my mind, a major stumbling block for the Israelis (in realising this), is their belief that the Israeli state 'must' be big enough to accommodate a full withdrawal of all Jewish people to Israel in the event of their desire to do so at any time in the future (and how geographically large a state would that have to be?). Any UN intervention at this time, should be to ensure that Israel is not producing or stock-piling nuclear weapons which could be used against their neighbours (as famously asserted by an Israeli nuclear plant technician to Australian Newspapers some time ago).
