How did it come to this, with the US and NATO leaving with their tails between their legs?
It started with Zbigniew Brzezinski, NSA Director, who wanted the Soviet Union to be entangled in Afghanistan, but the long-term plan was to bring Caspian Sea gas and oil to Pakistan via Afghanistan. George W. Bush entertained the Taliban leadership at his Texas ranch back in the late 1980s.
Brzezinski armed, funded and trained the mujahedeen until the Soviets left. Then these same war lords started to fight between themselves causing havoc to US plans. The US CIA then gave money to Pakistan to organise and arm the group we now know as the Taliban.
The Taliban took control of 90% of the country in a very short time except the northern part, which was supported by Russia. When the Taliban would not play the game by US rules, the Americans sent in troops under the famous pretext that they are going to remove the group giving aid and succour to Al Quaida which bombed the twin world towers in NY, or so the Americans claim. Personally, I would not discount the theory the US did it to create an excuse to invade and regime change in the Middle East.
The US threw everything they had except nuclear weapons and still could not defeat the Taliban so 20 years later the US and NATO leave like thieves in the night and guess who runs the country?
This will have very long and reverberating consequences. This is the death knell of an empire in colour. Its history in the making.
