Do you know in what town your father was born? But you weren't there to know personally. Instead, you take it as fact based on the testimony of trustworthy witnesses. (There is a chance that you don't know where your father was born. Even if that is the case, there are plenty of other things you believe on the basis of trustworthy witnesses.)
The same applies in this case. Although the witnesses lived two thousand years ago, that doesn't make them any less reliable than our parents or friends.
