Serbian police (MUP) officers have made arrested in several Pancevo-based driving schools for irregularities and abuses in giving out licenses. According to Belgrade daily Vecernje novosti, three police officers are among those detained in this town just north of Belgrade, while an investigation is ongoing into two owners of driving schools and several commission members for driving tests, as well as about a dozen people who bought licenses. Driver license scandal uncovered The daily’s sources say that this is "just the beginning", and that many other arrests are expected to be made in several other schools, in an effort to stem off corruption and support a new traffic safety law, which is due to take effect on December 10. “They bought licenses without finishing basic training. If they think that it is enough to learn to drive on their own, and pay for a license, they are fooling themselves,” the source said. According to the source, the licenses were given out in between July and October of this year, and they cost in between EUR 300-400. According to unofficial estimates, several hundred licenses were sold in this way all over Serbia, and the corruption involved police officers, driving school owners, and driving test commission members. The newspaper dubbed the owners of such licenses "drivers-killers", and said that their numbers "can only be guessed".
