EU mission in Kosovo, EULEX, has confirmed that they are handling an investigation into the circumstances of the drowning of a group of Kosovo Albanians.

EU mission in Kosovo, EULEX, has confirmed that they are handling an investigation into the circumstances of the drowning of a group of Kosovo Albanians. 16 people reportedly died last week when they tried to illegally cross from Serbia to Hungary over the Tisa River in the north of the country. EULEX investigates immigrant deaths EULEX stated that the investigation was concentrating on the smuggling of 19 people of which 16 allegedly drowned. The statement reads that one person turned himself in to Kosovo police, KPS, on Saturday night and “gave a very important statement” regarding this case. According to this, the suspect also turned over the money received from the victims as a guarantee for their trip to Hungary. The investigation showed that each family was supposed to pay between EUR 6,000 and 8,000. EULEX is currently working on identifying the individuals abroad who were in contact with the organizers in order to smuggle the illegals across the border. EULEX prosecutor is in Hungary, gathering additional information together along with two KPS members. KPS stated yesterday that they had issued a warrant for the arrest of four people involved in the case.
