MUP denies claims of piracy on Danube

Assistant Police Directorate Chief Zeljko Nikac says there are no organized pirate gangs on the Danube in Serbia. "There are individual cases of theft and smuggling, but much less than the stories say. According to operative data that the police has, there is no organized crime in the shape of piracy on the Danube through Serbia," Nikac told the Belgrade daily Danas. His comments came after Bulgaria's national river shipping company deputy director Ivan Ivanov told the BBC's Serbian language service that "pirates from Serbia attacked its ships on the Danube 38 times in the past two years". Nikac said that some of those cases have been registered, and that others are still investigated. Serbian MUP is advising companies and insurers to check each reported case of robbery aboard ships, "the possibility of virtual reports of attacks should not be ruled out in these cases".
