Six former UNMIK officials in Pec face charges of abuse of powers and embezzling EUR 230,000 intended for humanitarian projects. Chief District Prosecutor Fliamur Kelmendi said that the charges, brought on Monday, referred to two U.S. nationals, one Brazilian, one Italian, and two other persons of unspecified nationality. The charges relate to financial abuses carried out by these individuals—believed to be senior personnel at UNMIK’s branch in Pec—in the municipality in 2003 and 2004. Prosecutor in the case Ali Ukaj said that an investigation into the matter was by no means easy and that there was “a lot of material.“ Neither the police nor the prosecution have released the names of the suspects, though it is certain, say media, that they include a former senior local UNMIK official, Italian Laura Gava, and her assistant and interpreter Sokol Luta who was employed in the office until last year.
