Foreign investors still deem Serbia unsafe for investments primarily for political reasons, according to some business experts.

Investing in Serbia still risky?

In her opinion, foreign investors often struggle to grasp the rules that govern the Serbian market. Serbia still lacks certain institutions and laws in comparison to other developing countries. Serbia is short of long-term economy planning, which Škorić sees as one of its biggest problems.

“Serbia needs to work on planning and create strategies. Serbian companies rarely plan their agenda six months or a year in advance and lose precious time”, Škorić said adding that much needed pro-Western way of thinking gradually begins to take root in Serbia.

Slavenko Đorić from the International Relief and Development Organization (IRD) believes that Serbia has to improve the infrastructure and achieve genuine decentralization so as to attract hesitant foreign investors.
