Serbs “for partition of Kosovo”

Friday – The most popular option among citizens of Serbia for the fate of Kosovo is partition into Serb and Albanian occupied areas, the director of the Belgrade Social Science Institute said today.

Dragomir Pantic told Novi Sad daily Gradjanski List that the growth in popularity of the option showed a trend in public opinion towards rational, realistic and pragmatic solutions rather than clinging to an ideological and emotional identification with Kosovo.

“The people of Serbia have begun to think with their heads and to relate critically and in terms of their interests to this issue.  This shows that the people of Serbia are now resistant to political manipulation and the attempts of some politicians to exploit the problem of Kosovo in order to divert public attention from economic difficulties,” said Pantic.

There is a wide difference in opinion on the Kosovo issue between citizens of Serbia and Montenegro, according to Pantic who says that the greatest factor in this is the divided opinion of Montenegrins on the viability of the state union with Serbia.

“Advocates of an independent Montenegro believe that the Kosovo issue can only hinder them on the road to Europe, while supporters of the federation with Serbia see it as a lack of solidarity and selfishness.

“Even in Montenegro, the Kosovo issue is useful for political manipulation,” he added.
